Five challenges

Here are the details of the five challenges.

Fiesta Flags challenge

The Fiesta Flags challenge is open to individuals and groups. The flags will be hung in our symposium gathering area and add to the party atmosphere.

  • Each entry consists of six flags hung on a 2 metre cord.
  • Flags can be bound, bagged or raw edge, but must be backed, batted and quilted. An example method of construction is available on the website.
  • The back of the flags may be visible when hung, so the backing should be consistent with the ‘Fiesta’ theme.
  • The rightmost flag must be predominantly black to create definition between entries.
  • The finished size of each triangular flag should be approximately 10.5” wide x 16” long.
  • Flags must be mounted on a 2 metre long light-coloured cord of approximately 2-5 mm width, and fixed in place with a 1cm gap between each flag. Leave 17cm free cord at each end for connection to the next set of flags. See the diagram below for layout instructions.
  • If you are not sure where to start, this pattern for bagged method flags might help.

Resene – A World of Colour Paint Chip Challenge

Each person who chooses to participate will receive two randomly selected paint chips from the current Resene range - one colour and one neutral.

  • The challenge is to construct a 12” x 12” mini quilt with your assigned colours. You can use lighter or darker versions of your colours, but must stay within hue.  Black & white fabrics can be added.

  • The paint chips are to be submitted with your finished entry and the chips you return must match the chips you were issued

  • These mini quilts will be pinned for display and do not require a hanging sleeve or Velcro.
  • Sign up to receive your paint chips by sending an email to including your name, Symposium registration number and your postal address.

Speak to Me Challenge

We live in a sea of communication - ideas and emotions conveyed with speech, sign, written language, pictures, music, touch, colour and form. Even a single image or glance can convey a strong message.  Essentially, communication creates our ties to others.  It moves and changes – it does not stand still.  Can you make your quilt speak for you?

  • All quilts must measure 60cm x 40cm (approx. 23.5” x 16”).
  • Quilts may be in portrait or landscape orientation.
  • Quilts can be mixed media and utilise unusual construction methods or materials, but they must be two dimensional only.
  • The hanging instructions for the Speak to Me challenge will be confirmed at a later date.

In the Beginning Challenge

Quilts started in an Auckland Symposium 2019 class are eligible for entry to this challenge. This includes quilt pattern classes and technique classes.

  • You will need to supply detail of the relevant tutor and class.
  • This challenge will be juried due to space constraints. The hanging instructions/size limits for this challenge are the same as for the main exhibition.

Informal Symposium Tote Bag Challenge

We will not be issuing tote bags at Symposium registration, so we are asking you to bring your best personalised tote bag to Symposium.

  • Noticeable bags will be rewarded with spot prizes at the daily Happy Hour drinks.
  • Tote bags will not be judged as part of the Exhibition, and do not need to be entered via the entry form.
